Working With Your Metal

Prior to committing to using metal provided by you for a remodel project, Webb + Steele must conduct further investigation to ensure its workability and before your quote can be finalised.

There is a minimum fee of $150. This covers the testing of up to 5 pieces of the same colour and karat gold, to be melted and rolled as is, and without any stone extraction. More than 5 pieces, multiple metal types, alloying of metals to different colours/karats and/or stones to be removed prior to melting will be quoted individually.

  1. Test the metal with an XRF laser.  This gives us a reading of the exact gold and other alloy content. We will record the purity outcome of all tested pieces.

If anything suspicious arises we will contact you at this point.

  2. Melt, combine or alloy your metal to the desired carat and/or colour.  When alloying up or down we will calculate the amount of alloy required and add this to your metal.

  3. Roll your metal from an ingot to a bar or wire form (whichever is applicable to your project).  This ensures we can manipulate your metal to the form required without metal stress or failure.

Metal stress is when the surface has small cracks on the edges or small fissures on the surface.

Metal failure is the severe cracking, flaking or even crumbling of the metal.

In either of these cases we will be in touch to advise you that your metal is not workable for the project and provide details of what it could be used for or where it can be sold to a gold buyer.

Our Test, Melt & Roll fee is a service and once concluded is neither refundable nor deductible from any following quotes.

Please note: We denote up to an hour of time to this process per metal which may require multiple melts to get the metal/s workable.  If we reach this time limit and the metal is not quite workable but we believe it can be cleaned with an acid bath or other processes we will be in touch to advise as such and a quote to continue working on your metal.  It is not a guarantee we can make your metal workable but we will give you a probability of chances.  You may opt to have your metal returned to you at this stage.

Only once a successful ‘Test, Melt + Roll’ procedure has been completed can any subsequent quotes be finalised for the metal supplied.
